About Counter Culture Coffee

Founded in 1995 in Durham, North Carolina by Brett Smith and Fred Houk after being inspired by the Sustainable Coffee Congress hosted by the Smithsonian. They started by selling custom blends to local Southern restaurants and became the first organic-certified coffee roaster in North Carolina. Counter Culture pioneered direct trade and radical price transparency in the specialty coffee industry.

Sourcing & Philosophy

Counter Culture sources from multiple small estates and cooperatives, emphasizing ethical partnerships with farmers. Since 2009 they have published FOB prices for all coffees, demonstrating their commitment to paying above Fair Trade minimums and C market prices.
