About Stumptown Coffee Roasters
In November 1999, Duane Sorenson quit his head roasting job, emptied his savings to buy a 5-kilo roaster for $8,300, and set up Stumptown Coffee Roasters in a former beauty parlor on Southeast Division Street in Portland, Oregon. Sorenson visited coffee farms in person and reportedly paid three to four times the fair trade price, once setting the record for highest price ever paid for coffee beans. Stumptown helped define the third wave coffee movement.
