What TDS is best for coffee brewing water?
The SCA Water Quality Handbook targets 150 ppm TDS, with 75–250 ppm considered acceptable. Below 75 ppm, water has too few minerals to extract flavor evenly; above 250 ppm, excess minerals mute flavor and accelerate scale buildup.
Can I use tap water for coffee?
It depends entirely on your municipal supply — TDS commonly ranges from under 50 ppm to over 400 ppm by region. Check your utility's Consumer Confidence Report or test with a cheap TDS meter before assuming it's brew-ready.
Is distilled or reverse osmosis water bad for coffee?
Used straight, yes — distilled and unremineralized RO water sit near 0 ppm, well below the SCA's 75 ppm floor, and tend to brew flat, thin coffee even at a correct grind and ratio. Remineralizing with a mineral concentrate (or blending with a little tap/spring water) brings it back into range.
Does water quality affect espresso machines?
Yes — water on the hard end of (or above) the SCA range deposits limescale in boilers, valves, and group heads, causing temperature instability and expensive repairs over time. Water that's too soft can be corrosive to internal metal parts. Staying inside range protects the machine as well as the cup.
How is this different from your Extraction Calculator?

Should I buy bottled water made for coffee?
Purpose-built brewing water is formulated to land inside the SCA's target range and is a convenient option if your tap tests outside it — but it's not required. Plenty of tap, filtered, and spring water already falls in range; test first before buying anything.
