Frequently Asked Questions
How is the SCA cupping score calculated?
On the SCA cupping form, ten attributes (fragrance/aroma, flavor, aftertaste, acidity, body, balance, uniformity, clean cup, sweetness and overall) are each scored from 6 to 10 in quarter-point steps. The scores are added up for a total out of 100, then defects are subtracted.
What cupping score makes a coffee specialty grade?
A coffee must score 80 or higher to be considered specialty grade. 80 to 84.99 is Very Good, 85 to 89.99 is Excellent and 90 and above is Outstanding.
How are defects subtracted from the cupping score?
Taints are subtracted at 2 points per defective cup and faults at 4 points per defective cup, multiplied by the number of cups affected out of the five cupped. Enter the total points to subtract in the defects field.
Is this the same as a Coffee Review score?
No. Coffee Review uses its own 100-point scale and its own criteria. This calculator follows the SCA cupping form, so the two numbers should not be compared directly.
