Frequently Asked Questions

How many scoops of coffee for a 12 cup coffee maker?
A 12-cup maker holds 60 fl oz (about 1.77 L) of water. At a medium 1:17 ratio that is about 104 g of coffee, roughly 10 level scoops or 21 tablespoons. Use 11 to 12 scoops for strong coffee.
Why is a coffee maker cup only 5 oz?
Coffee maker cups follow an old industry standard of 5 fl oz (about 148 ml), not the 8 oz measuring cup. A 12-cup carafe therefore makes about 60 oz, which is closer to 7 and a half standard cups.
How many tablespoons of coffee per cup on a drip machine?
Use about 1 level tablespoon (5 g) per marked 5 oz cup for a medium brew, and up to 1.5 tablespoons per cup if you like it strong. A standard scoop is 2 tablespoons.
Do I fill the water to the cup line or measure it?
Fill to the marked line for your batch size. The lines on the reservoir assume 5 oz cups, so the number printed is the number of marked cups, not mugs. Brewing less than 25 percent of capacity often gives uneven extraction.
Why does my drip coffee taste weak or bitter?
Weak coffee usually means too little ground coffee for the water, and bitter coffee often means too much or a very fine grind. Weigh your dose against the table, then browse our 619 specialty coffees for beans worth brewing.
